First
Ladies Health Initiative
|
3
nursing students and 1 professor
|
The
first ladies health initiative took place at numerous church around the
chicagoland area. The church I was stationed at was in Oak Park, it served a
predominantly african american population. After church services, individuals
rounded stations to complete a health screening. Stations included accuchecks
for blood glucose levels, blood pressure and BMI ratios. I participated in
all of the above activities and provided services to approximately 50
individuals. I was able to discuss past medical history, medication routines,
health promotion activities, healthy nutrition choices and answer any
questions they may have or ask them to refer to their health care provider if
they have one. This activity allowed me to work on basic skills, therapeutic
communication in addition to complete teaching on topics of the individual's
choice. Some topics included medication adherence, hypertension and
hypertensive urgency, blood glucose management and physical activity
regimens.

Influenza
Vaccination Day at Rush University Medical Center
|
Clinical
and non-clinical staff employed at Rush University Medical Center
|
Activities
included obtaining basic medical information from influenza vaccination
recipients, administered 30+ IM vaccinations, provided basic education on
vaccination procedure, possible adverse effects of vaccination and when to
seek care if necessary.
This
activity allowed me the opportunity to interact with a variety of disciplines
employed at Rush. I was also able to practice IM injections, which I was not
able to routinely complete during clinical. I also did teaching and provided
basic education, I found that I was more comfortable than I realized
providing said teaching. I felt confidence of the ‘care’ I was providing and
felt competent when doing so.

Science
of Toys Program at the Sue Gin Health Center
|
Nursing
students and coordinator
|
I
participated in a health promotion activities in addition to teaching basic
health education to children between the ages of 6-17 years old. The students
completed a procedural task list that would result in a ‘toy’. The activity
was funded and supplies were provided by the Museum of Science and Industry.
After the ‘toy’ as assembled we discussed the physics and mathematical
properties that allowed the toys to function and bring entertainment. We also
discussed healthy nutritional choices and
importance of persevering and completing a task without jumping ahead.
The discussion was focused around how construction of the scientific toy was
completed.

Dorothy J. MacLean Fellows Conference -
Clinical Medical Ethics -
|
250-300
participants - including healthcare professionals and faculty, legal
professionals and fellows.
|
The
MacLean Conference focused on reproductive ethics, clinical ethics of health disparities
and corresponding payment reform, ethics and research with children but also
tangentially discussed families with members in the hospital could suffer
from food insecurities. There were
also topics surrounding ethics pertaining to transplants, consent, and
bioethics. The conference helped open my eyes to the many realms of clinical
ethics and the intense scrutiny it is under. The professionals in attendance
were extremely well versed and I
established with Dr. Lindau at Comer. She aided in implementing a food pantry
on each unit at Comer for family to have access to when family members are in
the hospital. We discussed need for a similar project to be established at
Rush University Medical Center and the ongoing food pantry initiative at Rush
Oak Park.

University
of Illinois Immigrant Health Seminar
|
University
of Illinois at Chicago and Rush
University medical center medical students, nursing students
|
During
this seminar we discussed - details of advocacy projects we would like to
work on including fighting for more immigrant welcoming policies at the
hospitals and clinics we work with, advocating for more medical schools to admit
and provide funding to undocumented students and encouraging professional
organizations to back the Healthy Illinois Campaign and other legislation
that would increase health care options for immigrants. We also debated
healthcare as a human right, health literacy and its costs, and refugee
health care necessities.
This
seminar provided me with insight on to a topic I lacked education in, I am
sought practice in identifying barriers to health for immigrants and
undocumented persons, Additionally, considering the current and ongoing
political state, the topics discussed were extremely relevant and have/will
impact the care I provide to all persons.

Development Meeting with SICU nurse Educator
|
2
Rush GEM students and SICU Nurse Educator
|
I
met with the SICU nurse educator to gain a greater grasp of current QI
projects taking place on the unit. She also gave a brief overview of unit
population. Staff culture, possible pitfalls and areas that are lacking and
need addressing. The outcome of the meeting was not ideal due to the number
of QI projects that had taken place in the last year. She mentioned that
nurse burnout on the unit was a very real and present issue they were attempting
to deal with. The insight I obtained during the meeting helped focus my
efforts on possible capstone ideas in addition to learning more about the
unit and population that I would like to potentially progress too.

I
obtained a mentor through the THRIVE program run by CONSC, they provide GEM
students with individuals obtaining educational advancement. They ask that
students and mentors maintain contact and meet periodically throughout the
terms. My mentor has given me guidance on what population would be most
suitable for me to work with. What my yearly goals should be to be able to
further my education and also what professional development activities to pursue
that would benefit me the most.

Shadowing
Psychiatric
Liaison nurse - In patient units at Rush University Medical Center
|
Psychiatric
Liaison Nurse and nursing student (myself)
|
I
shadowed the Callie, a psychiatric liaison nurse and sat in on some of her
consults and meetings with patients. The effect she has on patients is
profound and her skills in deceleration is crucial to maintaining a healthy
nurse-patient relationship. I found during my time with her that I did not
realize the impact of having a psych nurse liaison has on patient beyond just
conversing with the patient. They involve the appropriate parties, make sure
that all teams are on the same page and continuously follow up with patients
as well. I also assisted in
establishing a tool that has been implemented in the SICU, the tool allows for
easy access on when and how to call/consult a psychiatric liaison nurse.
